 FAQs

  • The short answer is I use a mixture of positive reinforcement and fair corrections to teach your dog how to be reliable on, and even off, leash and have tons of fun doing it. For most dogs, we introduce the use of a slip leash, prong collar or e-collar as tools that, when properly introduced, increases our ability to effectively communicate with dogs.

The longer answer is, I use a balanced training approach - which means I have a broad and flexible approach to operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is a learning process where behaviors are modified based on the consequences they produce, such as rewards or punishments. I use a comprehensive method of operant conditioning that integrates various principles, such as positive reinforcement, positive punishment, negative reinforcement and negative punishment. Each dog’s temperament and owners goals factor into the training plan meaning you’re getting a plan designed specifically for you and your dog.

  • An e-collar is NOT a shock collar.

Instead it is an electronic device that delivers a wide-pulse stimulation to a large muscle group - around the neck (sternocephalicus or brachiocephalicus) - that causes a mild contraction. If you have ever used a TENS unit before, for physical therapy, then this is very similar.

We use an e-collar as a wireless way to communicate with your dog. There have been many advancements in science that have taken electronic collars from the shock collars they used to be, to a gentle and humane tool for clear communication. Through proper low-level conditioning an e-collar becomes a tool for negative reinforcement. After a dog has already learned a command to fluency in a distraction free environment, we can introduce the e-collar as a way to keep your dog accountable even when the leash comes off. We introduce a neutral, low-level, stimulation with a voice command and teach your dog that when the command is followed the pressure shuts off and is followed by positive reinforcement.

Whether your goal is simply not needing to have your dog on leash to greet guests so they don’t jump, or taking them off leash in nature, an e-collar provides a backing for your voice commands. It is the ONLY tool that can keep your dog safe off-leash.

If you are still unsure - we are more than happy to explain more and even provide a hands-on demonstration of the product to dispel any concerns you may have.

  • We know you want to hear “Yes - absolutely!”

But the reality is that it depends, not just on the dog - but mostly on you - the owner. For lessons, short-term success depends on time and effort in-between sessions.

For dogs completing the board-and-train program, commands are practically guaranteed. However, once the dog returns home, success depends on continued and consistent of use. Moreover, the likelihood of continued success can be increased if owners and their families follow any additional prescribed elements - like regular walks/outings, play time, daily training session, etc.

  • Mannered Mutts Academy is based in Corpus Christi, TX. where I live, as well as board and train dogs.

Aside from the board-and-train programs, I typically meet with clients and train at Breckenridge Park. Of course I can meet you and your dog nearly anywhere in the city.

  • ‘Puppy lessons’ can start as early as 8 weeks. The earlier you start the more success you will have.

All other lessons and packages we offer are for any dog 6 months old or older; even ‘old dogs’ can learn new tricks.

  • Training won’t work if they don’t! While corrections are an important part of the process, the main factors that determine if a dog wants to work with you are rewards and relationship.

  • CGC is the Canine Good Citizen Test. The Canine Good Citizen is a test where a dog shows off their manners aiming to complete 10 specific requirements. It’s an official test with licensed proctors to administer the exam. It is required for owners looking to have their dogs become therapy dogs.
