About Me
Hi! My name is Kenzie Steen and I am the trainer and founder of Mannered Mutts Academy. Hopefully, you've explored the other pages to learn more about what I do, so I can focus on telling you a bit about myself. I believe it is important to know who you and your best friend will be working with. When you work with Mannered Mutts Academy, you’re working directly with me. I've had animals my entire life, but my passion for dogs has always been especially strong.
My moms words being “I realized that 95% of the stories she came home with from preschool were about dogs. In middle school, she would rush home to watch Pit Bulls and Parolees” .
Everything in my life seemed to guide me in this direction. This passion has driven me to adopt multiple dogs from the streets of Corpus and foster even more, all in my effort to help our four-legged friends. If I could take in every stray I saw, I would.
More than 3 years ago I decided to take my passion for dogs to the next level. I went to Animal Behavioral College which is recognized by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) and the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP). I finished as an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainers (ABCDT). I have been using it since to aid in my mission in training dogs with homes and helping ones without, locally in the Corpus Christi area.
One thing I wish I got every time I’ve looked at a small business, is a better sense of who they are as a person. You hear their story, you know what they do, but you don’t know who they are. You can’t really, until you work with them. So I want to give you the best chance to get to know me before you make any decisions. I spent a lot of time thinking about this and mulling over what was important to me personally and professionally and boiled it down to three things that I want to share with you.
The first is to make a difference. Dogs don’t have a voice and it is my goal to make their voices understood. Every dog communicates their needs differently, in part depending on how they were raised. Understandably, some of the ways they communicate can be labeled as ‘bad’ or ‘annoying’. Love, kindness and compassion are at the core of what I believe as I try to help owners provide loving and nurturing homes for themselves and their dogs so they can develop an understanding of how those ‘bad’ behaviors came to be formed.
The second is authenticity. To tell you exactly what I mean by that, I will borrow from author Brené Brown who said “Authenticity is not something we have or don’t have. It’s a practice - a conscious choice of how we want to live. Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It’s about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen” (The Gifts of Imperfection). With me, what you see is what you get. I am not always perfect, but I always put my dogs first. I am a dog person first and a people person second because much like dogs, I was not properly understood by most growing up. Having been diagnosed with ADHD and autism myself, I relate to dogs in their unique ways of experiencing the world. Just as every dog has their own personality and needs. I understand how important it is to treat each one with patience, compassion, and a tailored approach. The way I see the world allows me to see the beauty in their individuality and reinforces my commitment to creating training methods that celebrate the bond between dogs and their humans.
I strongly believe goodness can be found in all dogs. Through building a connection and training, I help them become confident and obedient. Then, those translate into other skills and behaviors allowing them to be their best self. Every dog communicates their needs differently, in part depending on how they were raised. When you know what that ‘bad’ behavior is trying to communicate, you and your dog can find other more positive ways for them to express their desires.
Last, but certainly not least, is family. Family has been a guiding force in my life. My family has shown me unconditional love, and I try to pass that along to others. Through both them and my life in the church, I know that no one is beyond redemption and I think that extends to all creatures. They just need a proper guide that understands them and that is where I step In.
